Pierce’s Q&A

How old are you, and how long have you taken piano lessons?

I’m 12, and have taken piano lessons for around 1.5 to 2 years.

What do you love most about playing piano?

The wide spectrum of music and possibility for melodies.

What is the hardest thing about playing piano?

Probably scaling up and down, because my hands are very small.

What do you like about your teacher Joe?

He is optimistic, and has an extremely wide knowledge of not only music, but production, pitch, and simply sound altogether.

What is your favorite song to play, and what is your favorite song to listen to?

My favorite song to play is “Tribute to Roberto Garcia Morillo” by Alberto Ginastera, and my favorite song to listen to is “Moonlight Sonata, 3rd movement”, by Beethoven.

Joe’s Q&A

How old were you when you took your first music lesson, and what instrument was it?

I took my first piano lesson when I was 4 years old. My older brother had recently started lessons at the time, and I had to do just about everything he did.

What do you love most about playing music?

I love being able to express myself through a medium that feels limitless.

What do you love most about teaching music?

Sharing my passion for music is something that I find really satisfying about teaching. Whether it’s listening, playing, writing, or thinking about music, I’ve gotten a lot out of it over the course of my life. It’s exciting to see a young person develop the same interests with my help. I also think that there are many important life skills to be learned within the study of music, and I enjoy sharing these principles with my students.

What do you most appreciate about your student Pierce?

I really appreciate Pierce’s motivation and wide interest in music. He likes to think beyond the notes and rhythms, and our lessons often end with a philosophical discussion about music. Because he takes great interest in different styles of music, we get to cover a lot of ground in the lessons – we’ve talked about performance practice, music production, acoustics, and I even gave him a voice lesson at one point!

What is one of your favorite songs to play, and what is one of your favorite songs to listen to?

Ligeti’s Etude no. 4, “Fanfares”, is one of my favorite pieces to play. One of my favorite songs right now is “Resurrection” by Leafcutter John.
