Still Playing: Ella Brown

A new series in which we interview a former student who’s still making music after lessons!

“Piano Power gave me a strong foundation and lifelong love for music. I’ll always use my voice to connect with and inspire others.” -Ella Brown

College student Ella Brown took voice lessons with Audie Lomboy from age 8 to 18. Now a junior at Duke University where she performs on the dance team, Ella continues to use the voice she developed in lessons— but for more than just singing. Read on to learn more about Ella, including her wise advice for students in lessons now.

What was your favorite thing about lessons?

My favorite part of lessons with Audie was the bond we built over nine years. We shared new music and albums with each other, which really broadened my musical taste. It was such a calming and fun part of my Thursday nights.

What role does music play in your life right now?

Music is still a huge part of my life. I’m on the dance team in college, where I constantly learn new routines to different songs. My understanding of rhythm and tempo, thanks to voice lessons, has been a big help.

How did your experience in lessons with Piano Power shape you as a musician?

Piano Power helped me grow creatively and see music and life in new ways. I’ve developed a deep appreciation for all kinds of music and love sharing that with others. Audie also helped me find my own voice, which I use every day whether I’m on campus, in the car, or singing in the shower!

How do you see music’s role in your life in the future?

Piano Power gave me a strong foundation and lifelong love for music. I’ll always use my voice to connect with and inspire others. One day, I hope to enroll my future kids in music lessons too, to pass on that love.

What’s your life like now?

I’m heading into my junior year at Duke University, majoring in Psychology with minors in Chemistry and Math. I plan to apply to physician assistant school after college.
