Joey studied classical piano from the age of 5. Through the Evanston school system, he joined the concert and jazz bands playing trombone, bass trombone, and tuba–eventually becoming heavily involved in all areas of the music program in high school. He then refocused on the piano, studying Jazz Piano Performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his studies, he deepened his interest in the diversity of black American music and its many genres, including jazz, funk, r & b, hip hop, rock, and everything in between. After playing for years with his own funk/reggae fusion band, he pursued a professional performance career in Chicago, playing a variety of styles & venues.
Joey’s teaching style is adaptive, catering to the needs and interests of each individual. Because of his broad experience of styles, and his focus on piano, he is excellent and helping his students achieve specific goals on the instrument while making sure they have fun and develop the same deep love of music he has.
