Joey Meland

Joey is committed to instilling a lifelong creative spirit within his students, catering to their individual interests while also introducing new and exciting ways to approach music-making. In addition to fostering technical skills, he also emphasizes “thinking like a musician,” giving his students real-world applications for what they learn. He holds a bachelor’s degree in composition from the University of Illinois.

In addition to his work as an educator, Joey is an active performer, composer, and producer, playing within and across multiple ensembles that range from jazz fusion and metal to electronic and freely improvised music. His work as a multi-disciplinary musician has been recognized by BMI, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Reader, and Anthony Fantano, and has been heard everywhere from Netflix to public art installations. His most recent projects include a collaboration with ~nois saxophone quartet and original sound design for Chicago’s Rough House Theater. Joey looks forward to sharing his love of music and creativity with more great students in the year ahead.
